| Friday’s Favorite list of books…| …with friendship/squad goals

First and foremost: I’m a sucker for romance. I seldom read books with no romance present and even though I enjoy those stories as well, my heart secretly craves for a romance, lol. Young adult, New adult, paranormal romance.. genre doesn’t matter, but just GIVE ME SOME ROMANCE! But.. an element that’s maybe even just as important to me as the romance element is the FRIENDSHIP/SQUAD-element in a story.

In a lot of book(series) there’s a friendship/squad present, but not all of them are always well developed I think, which is such a shame since I think friendships are just as important as romance elements in a book. In my reading years, I’ve come across a lot of friendships and I definitely have several favorites that I’d like to give some more attention.

  • Harry Potter series – Harry/Hermione/Ron.

Their friendship is definitely FRIENDSHIP GOALS. I guess everyone would want a friendship like those three have, right? I love their banter, their different characters that complement each other perfectly and the development they go through in the series. These three characters were the first one that came to mind when I thought about friendship/squad goals.

“But the mere fact that they were still there on either side of him, speaking bracing words of comfort, not shrinking from him as though he were contaminated or dangerous, was worth more than he could ever tell them.” — Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince

  • Daughter of Smoke and Bone – Karou/Zuzana/Mik.

So when you start reading Daughter of smoke and bone you’ve got that awesome Karou/Zuzanna friendschip present and not too long after that Mik joins the group. They are so awesome together and I love Zuzana’s character especially. She’s so feisty and funny and one of the most awesome friends I’ve come across in a series so far.

“We’re playing Three Wishes,” she told her friend. “Cake, hot bath, soft bed. How about you?”
“World peace,” said Karou.
Zuzana rolled her eyes. “Yes, Saint Karou.”
“Cure for cancer,” Karou went on. “And unicorns for all.”
“Bluh. Nothing ruins Three Wishes like altruism. It has to be something for yourself, and if it doesn’t include food, it’s a lie.”
“I did include food. I said unicorns, didn’t I?”
“Mmm. You’re craving unicorn, are you?” Zuzana’s brow furrowed. “Wait. Do they have those here?”
“Alas, no.”
“They did,” said Mik. “But Karou ate them all.”
“I am a voracious unicorn predator.”

  • a Court of Mist and Fury – Rhys and his inner circle.

I love this group of Fae warriors together. Three man, two women with each a completely different character from the other and they fit perfectly together. I love how they challenge each other, and just go to the end of the earth for one another. Yep, Rhys and his Inner Circle is perfection!!

“I wonder if some part of me knew what was waiting for me. That I would never be a gentle grower of things, or someone who burned like fire—but that I would be quiet and enduring and as faceted as the night. That I would have beauty, for those who knew where to look, and if people didn’t bother to look, but to only fear it … Then I didn’t particularly care for them, anyway. I wonder if, even in my despair and hopelessness, I was never truly alone. I wonder if I was looking for this place—looking for you all.”

  • Throne of Glass series – Aelin and her Court.

Le sigh. again; Perfection. Heart-wrenching and just amazingly written friendships, which develop with every new book that’s being published. I abso-fucking-lutely loveeee Rhys and his inner circle, but Aelin and her court has an even bigger place in my heart. Lysandra/Aedion/Dorian/Manon and her Thirtheen.. I have no words for how amazing Sarah is in writing down these perfectly developed friendships. When reading I really feel a part of their group and I love their banter, fights, loving, happiness and laughter. They got a special place in my heart and soul, that’s for sure. That being said; I’M TERRIFIED, UTTERLY AND SERIOUSLY TERRIFIED FOR BOOK #7… Terrified my ships are going to be ruined and friendships are going to be destroyed. #sendhelp

“A gold coin says he misses,” Fenrys rasped.
“Save your breath for healing,” Aelin snapped.
“Make it two,” Aedion said behind them. “I say he hits.”
“You can all go to hell,” Aelin snarled.
But then added, “Make it five. Ten says he downs it with the first shot.”

“Gavriel’s son was bellowing Whitethorn’s name. A gods-damned victory cry.
Over and over, the men taking up the call.

Then Fenrys’s voice lifted.
And Gavriel’s.
And that red-haired queen.
The Havilliard king.
On into battle, on into bloodshed, they called the prince’s name.”

  • the Kingmaker Chronicles – Griffin, his group of warriors -Carver, Kato & Finn- and Cat.

This group of friends is one of my favorites. They represent what a well oiled squad should be like. The men fought alongside each other for years now and became the best of friends. And when Cat joins them, she rolls right into the group like she’s always been a part of it. This group gives me the same kind of adoring feelings I got for Rhys and his inner circle for example. This is definitely a squad you want to be a part of.

“She talks big, but she’s made of custard.” “Fluffy and full of cream?” Kato wiggles blond eyebrows at me.
Carver grins. “Think she’s sweet, too?” My eyes spit fire. “Bite me. You’ll find out.”

  • the Fae Chronicles – Ryder and his elite Guards.

I’m a sucker for sexy Fae leaders who are surrounded by a group of men/women they live/love/fight together with and for. And Ryder & his Elite Guards are one of my favorite squads I’ve ever come across in a series. You really need to read these books, to truly know how deep their love for one another goes and how strong the bonds are between them. I love a good romance, but reading about well developed squad-relationships is definitely something high on my wishlist as well when reading a book that contains larger groups of people who are getting seriously involved in the story. I love authors who are willing to delve deeper into those friendship/squad-relationships instead of mainly focusing on the romance. And with this series you get both; the most amazing sexy romance and the most awesome squad goals as well.

“Ryder, we got a problem,” Ristan called from beyond the other side of the etched-glass shower door.
“Someone had better be dying, Ristan,” Ryder growled when he’d pulled
away from kissing me.
“They might be. You need to come see this.”
“We will be right there,” Ryder called out as I slid down his hard body.
He watched me with a smirk and then placed his hand on my arm
to move me from beneath the water, so he could rinse off.
I watched him, unable to pull my eyes off of his hands as they roved over his body.
He was quicksand, and I was sinking.
“Did you say we?” Ristan asked.
I blushed from my head to my Paint Your Toron-Toes Rose colored toenails.
I opened the shower door and stepped out meeting Ristan’s eyes. “Don’t ask.”
“How the…did you sift into his shower?” he asked, bubbling with laughter.
“I said don’t ask! It wasn’t my fault. I was sleeping!”
I shouted as both men laughed even harder.
“Real mature, just real fucking mature!”

  • the Dark Artifices – Jules en Emma.

Okay, they have the ‘we’re parabatai but are secretly in love with each-other‘- thingy going on now, but the basics of their ‘relationship’, the thing that ties them together aside from their parabatai bond, lies in their amazing friendship. A friendship that’s been insanely strong ever since Emma joined the Blackthorns family when she was younger. From their little ‘secret writing on each others hands’ to defend each other on all fronts and not because they’re parabatai per se but just because their friendship is so strong and real and deep. I love seeing they’re always able to rely on each other for their friendship, even if everything else around them falls apart.

“We are bound together, Emma, bound together—I breathe when you breathe, I bleed when you bleed.
I’m yours and you’re mine, you’ve always been mine, and I have always, always belonged to you!”

“You could sketch me,” said Emma. She flung herself down onto her seat, leaning her head on her hand.
“ ‘Draw me like one of your French girls.’ ”
Julian grinned.
“I hate that movie,” he said. “You know I do.”
Emma sat up indignantly.
“The first time we watched Titanic, you cried.”
“I had seasonal allergies,” Jules said.”

So, that were some of my favorite friendships/squads. Do you have favorites? Love to hear which one you like!
Hope you have a lovely day!

  1. I like this blogpost 🙂 I love the friendship of Ron, Harry and Hermione of course <3 Rhys and his inner circle are also a great example of the perfect squad! I haven't read Daughter of Smoke and Bone, but I really want to! Friendships in books are great, sometimes I prefer them over love-relationships.
