So a while back I got a subscription to the Illumicrate box. This is a book box that’s been sent out once every quarter of a year, so it’s a perfect one to subscribe to next to the monthly Fairyloot I’m buying nowadays as well. I really liked the contents of previous boxes so I was hopeful for this month’s box. After waiting very impatiently – yeah, sorry.. patience is not my thing haha – I finally received the box earlier today!
What is Illumicrate?
It was already quite dark outside so the lighting wasn’t all that great, but I tried to make the best pics I could at the time. I’m so excited to share this box with you, are you ready?!
As with most boxes, the first thing I see when I open it is the Name Card box with on the back the shops mentioned who created all the items inside the box.
the first actual item I come across is this really adorable unicorn 2018 planner. It has quite a simplistic layout inside but that’s what I love about it actually. At first, I didn’t think I’d have any use for this item but then I thought about using it for my blog planning. I normally use a Calendar plugin for my blog-stuff but I really love to have a hand-written planner on the side as well. I now use my Bullet Journal to do this but I don’t always find the energy lately to draw up my own planner, so this baby here is perfect to use for that I think! So I’ll definitely try to start using it when January 1st is around the corner. This Unicorn Journal is exclusively designed for Illumicrate by @prismofstarlings.
“THE RIGHT BOOK” PRINT
This beautiful quote by J.K. Rowling is probably known by A LOT of readers out there and I really, really love this quote. I love art/quote prints as well, so having this quote in print is really awesome and I can’t wait to add it to my bookish memory scrapbook I’ve started on recently. I love the simplistic design of the gold and white, it’s just perfect! This print is exclusively designed for Illumicrate by @nutmegandarlo.
READING IN BED CANDLE
Oh yes, I was really looking forward to seeing – and smelling of course – this baby up close and personal. I did already see the content of this box on Instagram earlier so I knew everything I was going to unbox but looking at them online and unpack them yourself are still two different things. The unboxing always is such a joy <3 and unpacking items like this makes me squeal like a little girl who gets a new set of glitters or such haha – just a happy feeling you know!? This exclusively designed candle by Meraki Candles smells so incredibly awesome you guys! As it says on the front: hot chocolate.. That’s what you smell and I almost want to just gobble up the candle haha. It instantly makes me craving for a hot chocolate! And I really love the sticker design and the candle color/glitter mix.
BOOKISH TEA TOWEL
I’ve seen bookish towels here and there popping up in a bookish box and I really like them. But at the same time, I’m like: it’s such a shame to really use them you know? haha. Well, first: I really need to iron this baby to get those wrinkles out – it hurt my eyes taking these pictures showing those wrinkles but I just wasn’t up for ironing it right now, lol. And maybe I’ll use it as a background for pictures? I don’t know.. But I hate the idea of using it in the kitchen, because my towels often get stains in them which I can’t get out 100% and I don’t want that to happen to this one haha! This Tea Towel design is exclusively designed for Illumicrate by @evannaveillustration.
MOON AND STARS NECKLACE
This item is so freaking cute! It came with this really beautiful package with stars and moons on it and I really love the design of the moon and stars charm. This item was exclusively designed for Illumicrate by @ohpandaeyes saying this about the item: a little tribute to stories set in space. And that makes it such a great item for this box, because it’s a great match with the Book inside!!
ARTEMIS BY ANDY WEIR
And now it’s time to show you guys the book inside the box. I already knew this book was going to be inside the box and I’m so excited to add it to my collection and hopefully read it soon! And aside from being excited about the content of this book, there are a couple of other things I’m excited about as well, being: 1. THE NAKED HARDBACK! It’s b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l! Whereas I already love the dust jacket of this book, I was completely taken by surprise when I took it off to examine the naked hardback. I didn’t expect to find what I did, so take a quick look at the pictures below to see what I mean hehe. And I also love the added bookmark and the flyer they added as well. It’s a flyer with content related to this book and it’s really awesome I think! The bookmark and flyer will definitely be added to my bookish memory scrapbook! Oooo and did I tell you about the colored pages? No? Well, look at the pictures: they’re black!! IT’S AWESOME!
~♥~ EXTRA’S ~♥~
that’s not all folks! This box had several extra items inside as well, starting with two samplers: one of THIS MORTAL COIL by EMILY SUVADA and a sampler of IRON GOLD by PIERCE BROWN, the 4th book in the Red Rising Saga. I haven’t read the previous books in the Red Rising Saga series so unfortunately, I don’t have any use for this sampler, but I’ll hold it for later because I’m planning on reading the series someday and I love having items like these in the collection 🙂 And I’ve already heard some great things about This Mortal Coil, so I’m really curious about this sampler! Definitely going to read this one soon!
And aside from two samplers, there was something even way cooler inside this box as well: A – Illumicrate Exclusive – printed ARC of City of Brass by S.A. CHAKRABORTY. This book released on November 14th, so it’s just been released. And I received an e-arc of this book last month as well, so that’s really nice haha. Now I can switch between the two editions while reading it which really comes in handy for when I want to read in bed late at night. I can switch to kindle then so I don’t bother the hubs with all the lights on. And, as you’ll see in the pictures below, the cover design for this printed ARC is so freaking stunning! And the book is so thick too! 500+ pages, damn! I’m really intrigued by this story-line and can’t wait to dive ‘into it’ soon.
Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trade she uses to get by—palm readings, zars, healings—are all tricks, sleights of hand, learned skills; a means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles.
But when Nahri accidentally summons an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to accept that the magical world she thought only existed in childhood stories is real. For the warrior tells her a new tale: across hot, windswept sands teeming with creatures of fire, and rivers where the mythical marid sleep; past ruins of once-magnificent human metropolises, and mountains where the circling hawks are not what they seem, lies Daevabad, the legendary city of brass?a city to which Nahri is irrevocably bound.
In that city, behind gilded brass walls laced with enchantments, behind the six gates of the six djinn tribes, old resentments are simmering. And when Nahri decides to enter this world, she learns that true power is fierce and brutal. That magic cannot shield her from the dangerous web of court politics. That even the cleverest of schemes can have deadly consequences.
After all, there is a reason they say be careful what you wish for.
This was my first Illumicrate and I’m really happy I bought it! Overall this box was just really great I think! I’ll definitely be able to use every single item in this box, one way or another so that’s awesome. And it’s really awesome they added an ARC to the box as well and I’m so excited for that particular book! And then the main book itself; Artemis.. I haven’t read the Martian yet by this author, but I love sci-fi books and have been wanting to read more adult sci-fi books as well – I mostly read YA sci-fi so far – so this is a perfect one to pick up when I want to read a new sci-fi in the future!
And as I said, I have a subscription to this box now so I’ll be receiving a box once every quarter of a year from here on out. I’ll be already looking forward to the next box! And I really love they also compose Special boxes every now and then. They recently did a GRISHA VERSE box as well, which was EPIC! I’m really bummed out I didn’t get it, but it was a bit expensive for me at the time (60 English Pond) But I really think this box is a great addition next to the Fairyloot I’m planning on buying each month from now on as well.
