| STORY SOUND SATURDAY | Hallowed Ground – Rebecca Yarros

This Story Sound Saturday has been in the making for quite a while now, but I never got around to finish it due to some concentration problems lately and first and foremost because of all these intense emotions I experience involving this book. But this book – the entire series, hell.. every Yarros book – is so deserving of all the love and attention we could possibly give it and I just really really wanted to write a Story Sound Saturday for it.

If you’ve read Rebecca’s books and the previous three books in the Flight and Glory series, YOU KNOW what I’m talking about here when I say that these books are so freaking beautiful and emotional. To me, they’re definitely one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read and let me tell you… When you think you couldn’t handle more heartbreak, intensity, and emotions, then there’s Hallowed Ground… Be prepared 😉

The conclusion of the Flight & Glory series takes us back to Josh and Ember from Full Measures. These two have been through a lot, and after 2 years together, battling distance, and Josh’s military career, it seems Josh and Ember are finally on the same page, moving forward, and in together. Josh is now a medevac pilot, and graduation is around the corner for Ember.

But it’s not all smooth sailing. Military life is not easy, and when Josh is deployed, Ember is reminded of some harsh realities. Josh, Ember and their relationship will be tested in ways they never prepared for. It’s always been, “You and me against the world,” but the world sure does throw these two some curve balls.

“I don’t care how you come home. I don’t care what parts of you are broken, or bleeding, or… anything, just as long as you come home. As long as your heart is beating, I will want you, do you understand me? I don’t care what happens there as long as you come home.”

Reading quotes like the one above of Ember saying to Josh that he has to come home.. they emotionally cripple me, on the spot. It ‘throws’ me back into their world and I experience all of it all over again, by just reading that single quote. That’s how deep that book has gotten it hooks in me. Reading this book was one of my most challenging emotional reads ever and writing a review afterward was one of my most difficult challenges ever as well, when it comes to reviewing a favorite book of mine.

I wrote my review in combination with the 5 stages of grief because that’s what I experienced while reading this book, because 1) Knowing this was the last book in the series and I just wasn’t ready to say goodbye and 2) well, you find out in the prologue but the SAVING GRACE song I have waiting for you to be heard, later on, says enough I guess? YEP.. this book was the death of me, lol.

I could keep ranting about this book for hours and hours but you seriously just need to experience it yourself to really know the impact this book can create.

So, yeah, let’s get on to the music part, shall we? First, I let you guys see/hear the music videos I think are a perfect match to describe my feelings towards this book. But that’s not all because I got a treat for you guys! – I’m soo excited haha. I’ve been obsessing and writing and fangirling about it like I’m some kind of lunatic, lol. I got my hands on Rebecca’s own Spotify playlists. She was kind enough – kind being an understatement, lol – to share her link with me, YAY YAY YAY! Yep, I’m swooning big time over here, Lol. I’m non-stop listening to everything on her lists and let me tell you; her taste in music is awesome and when you’re listening to these playlists, you’ll be thrown right back into the world of the Flyboys and the Renegades and if you haven’t read the books you’ll definitely get a good feel for how intense, emotional and utterly breathtaking these books are. So I’ll share Rebecca’s playlist with you guys as well later on!!

ARMY OF ANGELS – the Script

This song breaks me every time. It fits Josh perfectly! And I adore the Script so much, their sound and lyrics are so freaking amazing and I’m really happy I can use one of their songs for this Story Sound Saturday edition.

When love’s a battle
And life’s a war
When I just can’t go on fighting anymore
When I’m surrounded
And they’re closing in
When I feel the bullets graze against my skin
This world’s a war zone
And I’ve got a shield
And I won’t surrender
‘Cause your love feels
Like an army of angels
Like an army of angels
Like an army of angels
Like an army of angels
Hey hey
If hate is poison then loves the cure
And it’s you that drives the demons from my door
When they got me cornered
Close to giving in
Oh I feel you round me like a second skin

HALO – Beyoncé

Again, a song that reminded me so much of Josh!

Remember those walls I built
Well, baby, they’re tumbling down
And they didn’t even put up a fight
They didn’t even make a sound
I found a way to let you win
But I never really had a doubt
Standing in the light of your halo
I got my angel now
It’s like I’ve been awakened
Every rule I had you break it
It’s the risk that I’m taking
I ain’t never gonna shut you out
Everywhere I’m looking now
I’m surrounded by your embrace
Baby, I can see your halo
You know you’re my saving grace
You’re everything I need and more
It’s written all over your face
Baby, I can feel your halo
Pray it won’t fade away

THE ONE – Kodaline

I came across this song in Rebecca’s own Spotify Playlist for this book and it brought tears.
The lyrics are soooo incredibly beautiful and fitting for the Josh/Ember romance.
The music and sound of Kodaline hit me right in the feels. So beautiful!

Tell me
Tell me that you want me
And I’ll be your completely
For better or for worse

I know
We’ll have our disagreements
Be fighting for no reason
I wouldn’t change it for the world

‘Cause I know
The first day that I met you
I was never gonna let you
Let you slip away

And I
Still remember feeling nervous
Trying to find the words to
Get you here today

‘Cause you make my heart feel like it’s summer
When the rain is pouring down
You make my whole world feel so right when it’s wrong
That’s why I know you are the one
That’s how I know you are the one

In life
It’s easy to get scared oh
But with you I am prepared for
What has yet to come

‘Cause our two
Hearts will make it easy
Joining up the pieces
Together making life

Yes, the boys go to war in this book and it’s intense, terrifying and it’ll change all their lives and OURS -readers- as well… This song fits so perfectly because it can be linked to the War elements in this book but – and that’s mostly the reason why I chose this song – especially to the Josh/Ember romance because, boy, do these two go through a rough patch in this book. Their relationship is hanging on by a thread and it’s heartbreaking. And this song.. damn, it fits so perfectly I think! The lyrics.. shjgbdhjfbghjdbfgdf

I’m sinking inside
And the maps and lines are broken down tonight.
I swallow my pride
But we’re drowning in the ocean and it’s tearing my heart open

Baby we’re high then we’re low, first it’s yes then it’s no,
And we’re changing like the tides
Yeah, but I want you, I need you,
And I guarantee you we’ll make it out alive

‘Cause I don’t wanna fight no more,
Even when the waves get rough
I don’t wanna see the day we say we’ve had enough

And I don’t wanna fight this war
Bullets coming off our lips
But we stick to our guns and we love like battleships.
Like battleships.

AMAZING GRACE – for King and Country ft. Rebecca st. James
No words necessary right? I think we all know what this song represents and the feels the song brings forth. I saved this song for last so you could cry your eyeballs out, if you haven’t already done that with the previous songs – I did though, lol. A lot of artists have sung this song over time and I chose this specific version sung by for KING & COUNTRY and Rebecca St. James because I just love the way they sing this song. It fits this book so perfectly I think because it has somehow, even more, power in the song than the versions I’ve heard before, but I guess that’s really personal as well. Maybe you don’t like it, maybe you do… But the song itself, the basics of the lyrics and such, is known to everyone out there and that’s more than enough already. I love the mix of both man and female sound… Yep, goosebumps over here and having a major sobfest as well.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

I promised you Rebecca’s playlist and I can’t wait to hear what you’ll think of all the songs you’ll come across. Enjoy!!

So, what do you think about the songs? Do they make you connect to the book, give you a ‘feeling’ about the book? For me, a lot of those songs really express a lot of moments/characters from the books and I couldn’t be happier that there are such beautiful songs out there that are able to connect me with books on such an emotional and intense level. I love listening to songs and remember the story, the connection with character, and feelings I’ve experienced while reading this book! Hope you liked reading/listening and see you next time? Have a nice saturday!

  1. I really love this kind of posts, I haven’t read this book yet, but I love the songs you picked! My favorites are The Script, If I Die Young and Amazing Grace, those songs are very emotional and mean a lot to me.
