New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter returns with an irresistible Original Heartbreakers story about a woman who's never felt desired and the man who wants her more than air to breathe…

Bullied in high school, Dorothea Mathis's past is full of memories she'd rather forget. But there's one she can't seem to shake—her long-standing crush on former army ranger Daniel Porter. Now that the sexy bad boy has started using her inn as his personal playground, she should kick him out…but his every heated glance makes her want to join him instead.

Daniel returned to Strawberry Valley, Oklahoma, to care for his ailing father and burn off a little steam with no strings attached. Though he craves curvy Dorothea night and day, he's as marred by his past as she is by hers. The more he desires her, the more he fears losing her.

But every sizzling encounter leaves him desperate for more, and soon Daniel must make a choice: take a chance on love or walk away forever.

I’ve recently put in a pre-order of this book and I also ended up with an e-arc through NetGalley. Gena is one of my favorite authors and I was dying to read something of the Original Heartbreakers series for ages now. The fourth book in the serie, Can’t hardly Breathe, released yesterday and I’m very excited to share my review with you!

It’s funny how one sentence – one moment – could impact a life forever.

So up front: For me, this was the first Heartbreakers book I’ve read and I can’t say I’ve had any trouble keeping up for not reading the first three books yet. The book is totally perfect for a stand-alone read, so that’s really nice. I’m already looking forward to read book 1,2,3 and the upcoming 5th book Can’t Let go.

+ Lovable – and very important as well; realistic – characters. Dorothea, Daniel and almost every single side-character present in the book has made me fall in love with them. From Daniel’s father to his two best friends and many more. Each character adds variety in the bigger picture and I loved them all for different reasons.

Dorothea Mathis was a heroine that was impossible not to love. She was such a joy to read about and easy to fall in love with. This awesome character had enough happening in her past and present as well,  that could have beaten her down, but she kept fighting and came out stronger! She wasn’t flawless but realistic and that’s what made her so lovable I think. And Daniel was, well.. *sigh* haha. He was really interesting and even though I don’t wish PTSD on anyone, I love reading about characters suffering from it in books, because they always experience such tremendous change throughout a book and I love that so much. Reading about characters that are broken in a way and find their way ‘back into the world’, with the help of others. He was just the right amount of hot and demanding, sassy, charismatic and lovable.

+ a slow burn but hot and sexy romance. It may be a slow burn romance but the sexually charged banter between these two main characters is off the charts HOT and I loved it so much. It had me on the edge of my seat and I really loved the intense build-up of this romance and the explosion was well worth the wait as well hehe. I love the added depth to the story and romance thanks to the slow burn. Both characters fought and are still fighting demons from their pasts, and especially Daniel now with his PTSD, so writing this kind of romance for these two characters was the best choice I think.

+ humor. Not many authors succeed in making me laugh out loud or laugh a Lot in general while reading a book. Gena is one of those authors who always succeeds in making me smile and/or laugh out loud. Contemporary romance books are often alike to one another and it’s small things like a certain type of humor, one that’s often recognizable through an authors writing style, that make a book more successful and therefore a more permanent reminder in my memory.

And this book had some of the most delicious banter I’ve read in a while. It was humorous and sexy and a lot of fun to read. I loved how hard Daniel chased and I loved the way Dorothea really made him work for it. Those two in the same room together was off the charts hot and/or hilarious – often the two were combined and that was just perfection!

+ a delicious writing-style I come to recognize as Gena’s. Whether I’m reading one of her paranormal romance books, her young adult books or now this contemporary romance.. Gena’s writing is recognizable and I love it so much. It has me hooked from the very first page and holds my thoughts long after finishing a book and this book was no exception either. I’ve devoured it. Couldn’t put it down – was really bummed out when I needed to put it down to cook diner, care for my son, etc. Every single free second was spent with this book in my hands.

This book was a perfect mix of laugh out loud moments, sweet, sexy moments, tenderness and heartbreaking moments. All of these elements were balanced out really well, which is very important for a story like this. To make all of those – often different and contradictory – elements work in a book is a difficult task for an author but it allworked extremely well in this story. I’ve had my fair share of crying and emotional break-down moments, my laugh out loud moments, heartbreaking moments, tender moments and more. Books like these will stand out to me because they made me feel so much through that amazing writing style and the lovable characters. I really can’t wait to read more of this series! I’ve received an e-arc of Can’t Let go, the fifth book in this series, so there’ll be a review online soon of that one as well!

If you’re in need for a new contemporary romance book that’s full with every element you hope for in a CR, you need to pick this one up. And I’m fairly positive book 1-3 are just as awesome to read as well! But this 4th book is definitely a must-read! Love, laughter, crying, heartbreak, tenderness and realism.. It’s ALL HERE, in these 416 pages of awesomeness created by Gena! Let yourself be swept away!
