Where to start? There’s so much to say about this last installment of the Renegades trilogy.. I can’t even begin to describe the immense joy I felt when I got an e-mail stating I was receiving an e-arc of REBEL – the book is due to release on August 28th. Rebel was one of my most highly anticipated reads this year and I feel so thankful that I was able to read this book before the release because the waiting was excruciating haha. I’m a member of Rebecca’s Flygirl facebook group so I already saw a couple of posts in the group from people who had the chance to read the book and they were one of the reasons for the wait being a hell to me, lol. So when I received mail from the publicist of Entangled I jumped up and down and started reading right away. FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY DFGBDHJBFGHBDFGHJBDFG A new Yarros book in my hands, YES!
Did the book live up to my high expectations?
YES, YES, YES. A THOUSAND TIMES YES! I swear to god; this author just never disappoints, she’s utterly amazing! Let me tell you all about my newest favorite couple; PENNA ‘REBEL’ & CRUZ. I’m a 1000% certain you’ll root just as hard as I did for these two. Their story is one hell of a ride, which is saying something considering the stories Rebecca already wrote. This is yet again a Yarros book that swallows you whole and never lets go. Perfection!
If you’ve read WILDER and NOVA you know beforehand this one is going to get rough. I was enhancing my emotional walls for Rebel’s story throughout the previous two books because I just knew this book was going to hit me right in the feels and maybe even harder than Wilder and Nova did so yeah; I had to prepare myself for as far as it was possible to do, lol. That’s the thing with reading books written by Rebecca, about characters like Rebel, who you’ve come to known in previous books and got a lot of insight on already; they are going to just hit you right in the feels. No escape possible whatsoever for the shitload of emotions you’re about to experience.
I should have been there – competing with and against them. Rebel would have been. She was tough, smart, aware of her skills and worth. But I’d somehow left Rebel on the floor of the arena in Dubai, crushed under the weight of a motocross bike and a stadium light her own sister had sent crashing down. For the last three months, I’d felt like plain ol’ Penna, and no matter what I did, I couldn’t rouse Rebel, couldn’t get her to stand up and take notice that I was withering away.
So, yeah..the story continues after Wilder and Nova went to the X Games and Rebel stays behind due to her injuries, physically and mentally. Penna is broken after what happened with her accident and Brooke’s (her sister) involvement in that. Getting herself back into physical shape to reunite with team Renegade is just one of Penna’s current problems. She’s not certain she should even go back to the Renegades and the fact that she can’t talk about her feelings towards her sister with the other Renegades makes her want to keep her distance from the Renegades for as long as possible. When she’s physically cleared by her doctors she plans a stunt – outside the knowing of Wilder and Nova – to see if she’s ready to go back being REBEL and part of the Renegades again, and that’s when she meets Cruz. The attraction is immediately present between them and she feels like Cruz can ‘see HER, Penna’ and he’s the first one ever to make an impact of this level on her.
She was fucking fearless, and even if I hadn’t been wearing a parachute, I might have jumped just to stay close to her- she was that magnetic. “Go to Vegas, they said. It will be fun, they said,” I muttered. I counted two full seconds, watching her chute deploy, then stepped out into nothing.
Even though Cruz is still a complete stranger to her, she opens herself up to him and he decides to go along with this crazy girl’s plan; jumping of a high ..
After all, he jumped plenty of times in the past when he was serving as a soldier so he could do this, right? Right. And he was too intrigued by Penna to leave her hanging now. He needed more time with her and see where this was going. So he’s jumping. And then they end up in a hotel room, ready to explore more of that attraction between them and then they end up in jail because of the stunt they pulled. Suck balls big time. They separate ways – not necessarily willingly at that point but there’s nothing to be done about it – and don’t think they’ll see each other again very soon until Cruz ends up as Penna’s teacher on the boat; BOOM!
From there on it turns into a roller-coaster ride of a developing romance that shouldn’t and couldn’t exist – Teacher-Student relations are strictly forbidden-, Penna trying to find the Rebel in herself again and starting to do more stunts with the Renegades which doesn’t always sit well with Cruz because he starts caring for her too much too soon and seeing her do stunts like that, makes him scared as hell. Then there’s also the matter of Cruz’s secret; the reason he really shouldn’t get involved with Penna because that’ll endanger everything he worked for in the past years. But the heart wants what it wants and since Penna and Cruz are forced to spent a lot of time together, somewhere along the line they’re bound to snap and not being able to resist each other anymore, with all it’s consequences..
Penna is a character I couldn’t compare myself with on some level since I’m not a thrill seeker myself haha but I loved her all the same. I love how strong she is on so many levels, how determined when she wants to do something, how strong headed she is and a real ‘Rebel-the name fits her perfectly!’ and at the same time how fragile she can be as well on the inside. She grew up in a boys-world and had to fight for everything she got but she succeeded and that’s really awesome! Penna is a kick-ass character I’ve come to love so much and couldn’t get enough of. I think it shows tremendous character that she opens up to Cruz the way she does – because he sees who she really is underneath the ‘REBEL’ part of her and gets her on a level not even her Renegade brothers do – that she’s putting herself out there for him because she feels he’s a risk worth taking – which he truly is, damn!
Rebel. I’d earned the nickname early, seeing as I never conformed to the societal norms my parents expected for a little girl. Motocross bikes, snowboards, parachutes, bungee lines, those became my dollhouses. The X Games took the place of cotillion. I bucked every trend, and gold-medaled in the Whip, which, up until me, had been a guy-only event. Instead of joining the Junior League, I gave in to my addiction for adrenaline and extreme sports, founding the Renegades with three of my closest friends who became my brothers. The number one way to get me to do something was to tell me that I couldn’t. I rebelled.
He has every element of an amazing book boyfriend! He’s supportive but not submissive. He knows when to bring out that caveman attitude – and when he does? OMFG.. your panties will melt at the spot and leave you a blubbering mewling mess of female hormones, about to burst, truly – and when to be sympathetic and understanding. This makes him a perfect match for the strong willed Penna. He’s loyal to his family, he served his country, he’s smart and sexy. There really isn’t one thing not to like about Cruz and Rebecca created the perfect counterpart for Penna without him being too much, you know? She really couldn’t have done a greater job, because Cruz fits Penna and this story so so sooo well without being overwhelming or putting Penna in the dark.
And of course a lot of already familiar characters return in this book as well, so you get to look forward to that too, yay! You’re going to love it! I love Penna’s brotherly relationship with Wilder, Nova and Nick. And I loved seeing these 4 Original Renegades together, that was something we had to miss for the most parts of the first two books. So that was definitely a nice surprise.
The romance is.. abso-freaking-lutely amaaaaaaaaazing. It’s everything I was hoping for and more and it’s a characteristic Rebecca Yarros romance and for those who already read some of her books; you now definitely know what to expect and you know you won’t be disappointed in the least hehe. For those of you who haven’t read anything by Rebecca yet.. Let me introduce you to one of the best angst-written, intense and beautifully breathtaking romances you’ll ever read and Rebecca always knows how to deliver when it comes to these amazing developed romances.
Cruz and Penna’s romance is intense, right from the start and even more so when they find out they officially can’t be together even though they both desperately want to – They see each other a lot and they can’t have each other. Hello cruel world!!!! And because this romance doesn’t start out that way, this is sooo much more then a Teacher-Student romance. Because when they meet they don’t know they’ll end up as Teacher-Student. But I absolutely loved the forbidden Teacher-Student aspects of this romance, I’m a sucker for these romances hehe and Rebecca is a master in build ups so yeah; you’ll experience so much feelings while reading this, damn. It’s addictive and excruciating at the same time haha. At certain parts in the book my heart was ready to com-bust and I was having trouble containing my emotions. Rebecca knows so so well how to build up to those moments, when everything falls apart. And god, those moments.. It tears you apart and you crave for more at the same time. I’m always having trouble writing about Rebecca’s writing and her romances because they are so intense, beautiful and I just can’t put down in words what her writing does to me. Her characters and their romances grab my heart and soul and never let go again. Cruz and Penna are one hell of a power-couple and show you the true meaning of love at it’s purest and sacrificing for that love.
“I’m not a normal girl, and I know that. But I think that you’re the only man strong enough to handle every facet of the woman I am. You’re everything I want, everything I need, and I just want the chance to be what you need, too.”
Everything – and I truly mean EVERYTHING. Because there’s something going on in the first chapter that still sends my fangirl heart into overdrive thinking about it. I even had to PM Rebecca (actually, I pm’ed her several times while reading the book but okay, lol. Couldn’t contain my fangirl outbursts buwhaha) while reading the book to tell her how freaking genius she is for writing that in there. It was the most wonderful surprise ever..You’ll know what I mean when you’re there 😉 – comes full circle and Rebecca gave this trilogy one hell of an impressive and phenomenal last installment, damn.
This might be my favorite of all three renegades books, which is saying something because NOVA and especially WILDER were absolutely phenomenal reads already. And Rebecca seriously NEVER EVER disappoints. She has a gift for making you FEEL alive when reading her books. You really feel as if you are living everything the characters are experiencing, in such an intense way you can’t stop reading or thinking about anything else.
I loved the fact we had a female Renegade in the spotlights with this one because Rebecca’s female characters are at least just as interesting and strong and phenomenally written like her male heroes. And whether it’s her military heroes or the stuntmen of this series.. They’re hot as hell, funny, smart, enchanting and addictive, each in his own way. And Cruz for example, who has all the lovable elements of a military man with just the right amount of interest in playing with stunts; He’s the combination of Rebecca’s Flyboys and her Renegade boys and I want to go down on my knees and kiss the earth she walks on to worship her. Rebecca’s characters are diverse and all extremely well developed throughout every book I’ve read, even in the novella’s she knew how to write well developed characters, romances and story-lines which is something not many authors pull off well, but Rebecca does. Every aspect of the book is perfectly developed and written. The story, the romance, the characters.. It just all connects, it’s in balance with each other and that complete package of those elements combined just works so well with that amazing writing style Rebecca owns.
I’m truly sad this was the last book of the Renegades, because I crave so much more. It was impossible for me to stop reading at slow speed even though I wanted to because I just didn’t want it to end. But there’s just no stopping the roller-coaster here. Once you’re in, you’re in and there’s no way to slow it down. This book gave me such a ‘high’ while reading it, and I’m always amazed by Rebecca’s talent. Not only the stunts were an adventure to read, but there are a lot of other things – romantically wise but story-wise as well – bound to happen in this book that’ll leave you at the edge of your seat, ready to com-bust. There’s angst, there’s family love, there’s adventure, there’s action, there’s some really hot sexiness between the lead characters going on which make your panties melt and then there’s an epilogue.. THE epilogue of all epilogues.. Sit back and enjoy the ride. Cruz and Penna are going to take you on one hell of a ride and you’ll never know what’s going to hit you until it’s too late and you’re right in the middle of this amazing emotional mess that’s going to turn your world upside down.
Soo, if you haven’t met the Renegades yet, please do so ASAP.
