| Story Sound Saturday | Spotify Playlist Nowhere but here by Katie McGarry

It’s been a while since I published a Story Sound Saturday article and I thought it was about damn time to write a new one. Since my review of Nowhere but here went online this week I thought it would be perfect to write a Story Sound Saturday about this book as well. After finishing this book I found a spotify playlist the author herself put together and ooooomygod you guys; it’s perfect! All of these songs fit the book so well! And I can’t wait to share the songs with you and let you know my favorites and such and hopefully make you fall in love with this book by listening to these songs.

Listening to this spotify playlist immediately brings me back into the story of Oz and Emily and it gives me all the feels! I love matching songs to books I’ve read and in this case the author already finished that part for me, so I decided to share the whole playlist with you guys and highlight my personal favorites of this list. These specific songs embody everything I felt while reading this book. Some songs have an amazing biker-feel to them and some of the songs tell you more about the romance and/or angst throughout the story and it was tough to chose a couple of favorites to be honest because the complete list was perfect. A lot of these songs especially give me a lot of throwback feels in regards to the male lead character OZ; they fit him so perfectly and I can’t stop listening and fangirling to and about these songs in regards to the book. I think Katie did an amazing job with this spotify playlist!! I love it so much when songs can give me such intense feelings about a book I’ve read and that they have the ability to bring me back into that world and my emotional state of mind I experienced while reading the book by listening to amazing lyrics and the music itself.

Let me tell you something about the book first, so you can get a bit more inside information and understand more about why these songs in the playlist are so perfect..

Oz grew up in this biker community and is on the verge of getting his patch to become an official member, while Emily never grew up in this culture but is connected to the biker community by blood. Emily is forced to spent the summer with her biological dad, Eli, who is this bad-ass biker and Emily starts forming a bond with him, her grandparents and Oz really fast and unexpectedly. Oz is only trying to get his patch, which he’ll get through playing bodyguard to Emily. They both never thought it possible they would fall in love with one another, but they do.. And both their worlds will get turned upside down. It’s a story of searching for answers, finding love, friendship and a new family in an angst ridden setting with some amazing writing skills by the author. Oz will get you week on your knees, Emily shows you that there’s nothing wrong with finding and exploring new things the world has to offer and Katie McGarry, the author, shows you how a perfect YA contemporary is being written.. That’s this book a nutshell; BOOM!

“You’re beautiful,” I say, and the honesty of my words stings. “You’re beautiful inside and out. I like how you challenge me. I like how I can never figure out what you’re going to do or say. I like how we’ve thrown weird shit in your direction and you take it like a pro.” I cup her face with one hand and caress her soft skin. “I like how you smile and how you laugh. I like how you love and defend your family and I like how you’re trying to love mine. I love how you trust. But mostly, Emily, I like how I feel when I’m around you.” Shit. My heart bursts as the words tumble out. “I’m falling for you.”

Olivia to Emily:
“This is your family … If you learn to love us then you will forever have our love in return.”

This was my first Katie McGarry book and it blew me away – hence the 5 star rating. Her writing is amazing, really! I loved that she wrote from both POV’s; Oz & Emily so you could get a good feel on both sides of these different ‘worlds’. After starting this book, I just really didn’t want to put it down anymore. Every free second I was able to pick up the book, I was reading. Katie’s writing took me away from reality and plunged me into a world full of bikers, an intense slow burn romance and the beautiful presence of a developing relationship between long lost family members and I devoured every page, chapter and word she wrote.

So, let’s continue to the music part of this article. As I said Katie made a playlist for this book herself and I loved her choices for this book and it’s awesome she also wrote down the specific characters/moments etc, the songs belong to according to her.

Hey brother by Avicii

This is definitely a perfect theme song for this book. The lyrics are just so good and spot on; they fit the book perfectly! For me this song embody’s a lot of feelings regarding the whole biker community we get to know in the book. This song gives you that same feeling of belonging you experience while reading about the Reign of Terror

What if I’m far from home?
Oh brother, I will hear you call!
What if I lose it all?
Oh sister, I will help you hang on!
Oh, if the sky comes falling down, for you
There’s nothing in this world I wouldn’t do

Hey brother! There’s an endless road to rediscover
Hey sister! Do you still believe in love? I wonder
Oh, if the sky comes falling down, for you
There’s nothing in this world I wouldn’t do

Ride the Wind – Poison

Again, a perfectly fitting theme song that give you a lot of biker feels when listening to the lyrics. And I just love these kind of rock songs from the old days – I’m a huuuuge Bon Jovi fan for example – and this song has just the right kind of elements to touch me. It definitely knows how to remind me of what I so intensely loved about this book; the perfectly written biker elements.

Hearts of fire
Streets of stone
Modern warriors
Saddle iron horses of chrome

Taste the wild
Lick the wind
Like something they never saw before
Their jaws dropping to the floor
Steel made of soul and sin

Rebels born without a care
(And the day he listens)
Only to fly where eagles dare
And the night she whispers

Ride the wind
Never coming back until I touch the midnight sun
(Ride the wind)
(Never coming back again)
Ride the wind
Never coming back until I touch the midnight sun

Painted flesh
Humble pride
Just as far as the eye can see

It’s Time – Imagine Dragons

This song is so well chosen – again – by Katie. She chose this song for the male lead character Oz and a lot of the lyrics is perfect for him. He’s ready to become a member of Reign of Terrors but it could also be a song to accompany the developing romance between Oz and Emily. And I absolutely looooove Imagine Dragons. Their songs have a great dynamic and expression and the sounds of this song alone fit this book really perfect but the lyrics are perfect as well!

I don’t ever want to let you down
I don’t ever want to leave this town
Cause after all
This city never sleeps at night

It’s time to begin, isn’t it?
I get a little bit bigger but then I’ll admit
I’m just the same as I was
Now don’t you understand
I’m never changing who I am

So this is where you fell
And I am left to sell
The path to heaven runs through miles of clouded hell right to the top
Don’t look back
Turning to rags and giving the commodities a rain check

Let her go – Passenger
-Eli toward Emily and Meg-

This song has been on my personal playlists for years now because I love the lyrics so much and the way the song is performed by Passenger. When I saw that Katie chose this song for Eli, I immediately thought: perfection! So beautiful and sad at the same time!

Well you only need the light when it’s burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go
Only know you’ve been high when you’re feeling low
Only hate the road when you’re missing home
Only know you love her when you let her go
And you let her go

Staring at the bottom of your glass
Hoping one day you’ll make a dream last
But dreams come slow and they go so fast
You see her when you close your eyes
Maybe one day you’ll understand why
Everything you touch surely dies

So, that were my favorites from the playlist the author put together. What do you think about the songs? Do they make you connect to the book, give you a ‘feeling’ about the book? For me, a lot of those songs really express a lot of moments/characters from the books and I couldn’t have done a better job than Katie because.. well.. she’s the author. These are HER characters and her story to begin with and she would know best, wouldn’t she? lol. I’m totally on board with her choices and loved putting this Story Sound Saturday together while listening to these songs and remembering the story, characters and feelings I’ve experienced while reading this book! Hope you liked reading/listening and see you next time? I’ve got several drafts for new SSS articles, which I hope you’re gonna love. Have a nice saturday!
