I’ve got several shop-logs planned on the calendar for you guys but I wanted to finish this article first. As you might know I was enjoying our vacation in Spain last week. Visiting another country also means shopping time! So let me show you guys which souvenirs and other stuff I bought last week when I was at Mallorca!
DECORATED BOX WITH SHELLS
When I was out buying souvenirs I came across this cute box with shells on them. I was looking for some stuff to decorate my shelves with at home and thought this would be perfect. I could put stuff inside it and it would look nice on the shelves. I’ve decided to keep some stuff that has to do with our vacation and I put these things inside the box. I found a tile from our swimming pool which sat loose on the bottom and thought it would be nice as a souvenir to take back with me. You see an orange bracelet in there, which we had on at all time so the personnel in the hotel knew we had an all-inclusive arrangement and I put the boarding passes from our flight from Maastricht-Palma in the box as well. I wanted to keep the boarding passes from our flight back home as well, but forgot them in the airplane – fail. I love little boxes in which I can keep souvenirs and/or other stuff so I’m very happy to add this box to my book shelves.
HANDMADE WOODEN DOLPHINS
I came across these wooden dolphins in a cute little shop that was a bit hidden underground. All the stuff they were selling there was handmade and I loved prowling around. There was so much I could’ve bought but I had to contain myself a bit, lol. When I saw these dolphins I knew I had to bring them home with me. I found the little one so adorable but it just felt off to not buy the bigger one as well, so they both went home with me, yay. I still have to find a nice spot for them on my shelves but I’m sure I’ll find one.
HANDMADE PHOTO ALBUM
I saw these kind of photo albums when I was in Mallorca two years ago but didn’t bought one then. They kept calling me every time I came across one in a shop, so I decided to take one back home with me this time around. I love the fact everything is handmade and all the materials used are eco friendly and of native origin. They used leaves for example for the back and little stones/sand for the front. The palm tree leaves are made of leaves as well. The pages are from eco friendly paper. Just everything is made of natural/native materials, really awesome. You can put pictures inside and/or write stuff down about your vacation.
I wanted to buy a book at the airport before our departure from Palma to Maastricht, but the English collection they had wasn’t awesome so I couldn’t find a book. I then saw a small selection of really beautiful notebooks and I decided to buy one of those instead. After carefully weighing which one had to come home I decided to buy this one you see below in the picture. I love the metallic/gloss hardcover with the flowers and those colors. It has a lint bookmark inside and decorated pages. Don’t know yet what I’ll write down in this notebook but I love to add it to the collection – I’ve got a little notebook addiction, whoops.
Even though this dream-catcher isn’t an handmade native American one material wise, I wanted it anyway. I’d love to buy a ‘real’ one some day but for the symbolism this one will do just fine. I came across a stand full with dream-catchers and this one caught my eye immediately. I love the contrast of the black woven patterns with the feathers and the colored beads woven into them. I wanted to hang it at one of my shelves but I think I’m going to hang it somewhere inside Milan’s bedroom instead, so he gets protected from bad dreams <3
What do dream catchers do? Purpose & Meaning of the Dream Catcher
Sometimes referred to as “Sacred Hoops,” Ojibwe dreamcatchers were traditionally used as talismans to protect sleeping people, usually children, from bad dreams and nightmares. Native Americans believe that the night air is filled with dreams, both good and bad. When hung above the bed in a place where the morning sunlight can hit it, the dream catcher attracts and catches all sorts of dreams and thoughts into its webs. Good dreams pass through and gently slide down the feathers to comfort the sleeper below. Bad dreams, however, are caught up in its protective net and destroyed, burned up in the light of day.
Aside from a notebook addiction, bookmark addition and many more I’ve also got a mug addiction. So I couldn’t leave Mallorca without taking a Mug home with me. I chose this specific mug because of the mosaic design, which I really love. And I always like mugs that go with an accompanying spoon as well, for when I make hot chocolate with whipped cream in the winter and such. The Salamander is an often seen animal on the island and therefore it became a sort of symbol. There are lots and lots of items to be found in the shops with Salamanders on them. Two years ago I bought a salamander bookmark when I was there – which is still one of my favorites today – so I wanted to take back an item with a salamander on it this time as well – the photo album contains a salamander as well so I bought two items, even better haha.
HAND-FAN WITH ILLUSTRATIONS
When you go to Spain, this is definitely an item you find everywhere you look; a hand fan with which you can cool yourself down. When I was a young girl I’d love to use these things when we were on vacation in Spain – I went there like 10 times now I guess throughout my life – and still I never brought one home with me. We bought two to use while we were there and now I have them as a nice souvenir.
As I said before, I love bookmarks and I love expanding my collection. I’ve tried finding some new bookmarks while on vacation but shop after shop and I found nothing. Eventually I came across one shop who did sell some 3D bookmarks with MALLORCA on it. The pictures are not really mallorca related but that doesn’t matter. I’ve expanded my collection with three new bookmarks, yay!
Ever since reading the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy by Laini Taylor i’m enamored with the Hamsa amulet. Karou has tattoos of them on the insides of her hands and I loveeee it. So when I came across the shop where I bought the handmade dolphins I also saw this hamsa charm and I couldn’t leave it behind. I plan on making an bookmark with it to accompany the Laini Taylor books on my shelves. I’ll definitely show you guys my end result in a DIY article someday!
The Hamsa hand is best known for the power to protect the owner from the evil eye and bring happiness to the holder.
The holder of the Hamsa expects to be protected from all negative energies.
Eye Symbol on the Hamsa
The eye drawing often found on the Hamsa represents the eye that sees everything. Nothing escapes this eye.
The eye watches out for the person in possession of the Hamsa and warns about and protects against evil encounters.
COTTON BAG WITH DESIGN
Well, another confession; I’ve got a thing for bags. Tote bags, hand bags, any kind of bag really, lol. So when I came across this cute bag for just € 2,50 I couldn’t control myself and walk by hihi. There were many different designs but this Paris design stole my heart. It’s so cute, don’t you think?
Soo, that’s quite a collection I’ve brought back home, isn’t it? I love every single item and thankfully most of them weren’t that large and/or heavy so they didn’t need much space in the suitcases. We’ve had a blast in Mallorca and I can’t wait to go back there again, hopefully next year.
Do you love shopping while on vacation? Do you often by souvenirs and if you do, do you look out for specific items or..? Love to hear from you!
