You think you know what is right and what is wrong? Then tell me if this man should die. He is my enemy. He is to be my end.

He is the one I love.

I have spent my life in shades of grey. I have died and returned to a world of color. I have fought an Angel and lived. I have kissed the Prince of Ravens. I have faced the Lord of Night and made him kneel. I was accepted into the Four Orders, and I created the fifth. I freed the Shadow of Rome. I sat upon the Twilight Throne.

The man asks for my surrender. He asks for peace. He is too late. The girl he knew is gone, and death is in her place. I am Nightfall, and this is my story. You think you know it?

Think again.

This YA paranormal/urban fantasy book about Angels caught my attention a while ago because of the cover. I then saw the good ratings and read the synopsis, which sounded amazing! Not long after that, I bought the book and when it arrived I started reading it right away. I was in desperate need of a new YA paranormal/urban fantasy series with angels in them and I was hoping this series was going to be a new favorite of mine. Curious to know if I loved it or not? Let me tell you in my extended review below.. Happy reading!

First off..  I love the setting/world building in this book. We learn the history of the fallen Angels who mated with humans and together they created the Nephilim, half angels/half humans who inherited angelic powers. The Nephilim and humans have been at war for ages with each other and when the Nephilim were finally defeated the humans were led to believe the Angels were gone at last and the Nephilim completely destroyed.. But they couldn’t have been more wrong.

Aside from ‘normal’ people there are still a lot of people out there who are descendants of the Nephilim and bear some of their powers. They are called ‘Zenith’s’ and are being treated terribly because of the past happenings between humankind and Nephilim. They’re being bullied or even worse; killed – for no reason at all, just because of simple fact that they’re born Zenith. They don’t have much prospect of a real future.. But they don’t know everything is about to change.. – This world is so well thought out and put together really well from what I’ve read in this first book and it still feels like we’ve only scratched the surface of everything. Can’t wait to read the sequel and delve back into this world, which is just absolutely amazing!  ❤

This book tells Scarlett’s story and how she becomes something she’d never thought possible. It starts off with Scarlett as a young girl who’s completely colorblind. Scarlett is determined to become a pilot, despite of her disability of not seeing colors. In one night though, her whole world gets turned upside down and Scarlett’s desire of becoming a pilot becomes a desire of getting revenge on the Angel who killed her parents. That particular night changed everything.. Something happened to her and she’s no longer colorblind. But she soon discovers an even more scarier outcome of that specific night; she starts craving blood and discovers she’s turning in the one thing humankind has been fighting against for ages – Nephilim – and it will make her Jax’s (her best friend and secret crush) enemy. In her search for revenge she meets new people and allies, gets new enemies and starts putting her quest for revenge in the background so she can fight for a greater cause.

I really liked Scarlett from the start. It’s obvious from the beginning this girl is special. She’s so driven, courageous and determined even though for one so young. I liked her immediately and she’s already one of my favorite heroines. She faces so much and comes out even stronger, without it being unbelievable. A well written and well developed character ❤. She wants to be the change she wants to see in the world and it’s pretty incredible how the authors wrote this character and through her getting an important message out in the world.

I really loved all of the side-characters as well. The twins, Jax… OMG *drools on her keypad*., He’s sweet and protective and wants to change things by being a positive example rather than through threats and violence. Then there’s Scarlett’s parents, Scarlett’s grandfather and last but not least; Zorin.. hehe, the only other living Nephilim besides Scarlett. Every single one of these side characters are an awesome addition and their presence was perfectly balanced out in accordance to the story-line . I kept wanting more, more more and every page gave me a really fulfilled feeling, you know what I mean? And some of the most awesome quotes were originated from side characters in this book, yay.

“Remember, little Star, it’s easy to fight,
but much harder to know when.
When to fight. When to win.”
His voice lowered. “When to lose.”

The one thing that bummed me out a bit was the lack of romance. There were definitely some moments present with hints for possible relationships to come, but I would’ve like it if it’d been a bit more present already in this first book. But on the other hand.. a story like this; with such an awesome world building and a strong heroine like Scarlett, doesn’t necessarily need a overly present romance in it. In the long run I think it’s the right choice the authors made on the account of having/not having an already full present romance in the story, but I wouldn’t be me if I just didn’t crave for it nonetheless, lol. But there’s enough to go from in this book and I can’t wait to found out if and what’ll develop in the romance department in the sequel!

O, and if you love plot-twists and surprises, you’re in for a treat with this one, damn. I’ve had a gut feeling about some things beforehand, which I was right about in the end. But my god, especially towards the end some things happened that really blew me off my feet.  Talk about awesome plot-twists!!!! So, yeah, you’ll definitely won’t be disappointed! downside; I haven’t gotten the second book yet, it’s on it’s way here so I have to wait a little longer before I can start the sequel and it’s killing me!

From story-line, characters to plot-twists.. Everything is really well written and thought out by the authors.  This was my first read of Karpov Kinrade and I crave for MORE reads by these authors. The story-line, world building and characters are so well developed, to perfection, which you don’t come across often in a YA series. As for developing and building an epic series with a first book this one feels like Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone for me if I have to compare it’s awesomeness to another series. And yeah, if you know me even a little you know this is one hell of a compliment I just gave since Laini’s books are one of the best I’ve ever encountered.  It’s a page turner from begin till end and I just loved every chapter, every page, every sentence, every word.  The writing style is truly awesome. Everything is so vividly written and enthralling. The whole package makes this a perfect first book of a new series and I’m so freaking excited for the sequel, ieeeeh *enthusiastic fangirl scream!!*

Have you ever fallen in love with a story about mythological creatures, angels, or a heroine with super human-like abilities? Then you are in for an amazing read with this bad-ass, action packed and enthralling story! This first installment in the Nightfall Chronicles is a MUST-READ for anyone who likes urban fantasy reads with Angels, a lot of other mythical elements and one hell of an amazing heroine.
